Humana Credentialing Services

Humana is primarily a Medicare Advantage carrier, which makes it essential for practices with older patient populations, especially in Florida, Texas and the Southeast. We file through Availity and follow the application through to a signed contract.

Humana at a glance

  • Medicare Advantage is the core product
  • Requires active Medicare enrollment first
  • Applications through Availity
  • CAQH data required
  • Typical timeline: 60 to 90 days plus contracting

The application path we run for this payer

  1. 1

    Intake and gap review

Licenses, DEA, board certificates, malpractice, work history and NPI details are collected and compared against what each target payer asks for.

  2. 2

    Profile setup

CAQH ProView, PECOS and payer portals are created or cleaned up, attested and linked to the correct Tax ID and locations.

  3. 3

    Application submission

Every enrollment is filed in dependency order, with a tracking record for each payer, date and reference number.

  4. 4

    Follow-up on a fixed cadence

Payers are contacted on a schedule. Requests for more information are answered the same business day.

  5. 5

    Approval, contract and handoff

Effective dates, provider IDs and fee schedules are logged and loaded into your billing system.

Humana's membership is concentrated in Medicare Advantage, with Medicaid managed care in several states and a smaller commercial footprint. If your practice sees Medicare-age patients in a market where Humana is strong, being out of network means losing patients who cannot afford out-of-network cost sharing.

ClainetRCM submits your Humana application through Availity, confirms your Medicare enrollment is active, since Humana requires it for MA participation, and manages the credentialing and contracting follow-up.

Where this usually goes wrong

Medicare enrollment not active

Humana will not credential a provider for Medicare Advantage without an active Medicare enrollment and PTAN. Practices that apply before Medicare is approved are rejected.

Availity submission errors

Humana's application lives in Availity. Incomplete attachments or a mismatched Tax ID are the most common causes of returned applications.

Medicaid products credential separately

Humana Healthy Horizons, its Medicaid product, needs a state Medicaid ID and a separate application in states like Florida, Kentucky and Ohio.

What ClainetRCM handles

One coordinator owns the file from intake to effective date.

Questions about Humana

Humana typically completes credentialing in 60 to 90 days after a complete Availity application, with contracting following. Applications filed before Medicare enrollment is active are rejected and must be resubmitted.

For Medicare Advantage participation, yes. Humana verifies your Medicare enrollment and PTAN. We sequence the applications so Medicare is approved first and Humana follows immediately.

Yes, Humana retrieves credentialing data from CAQH ProView for most provider types. The profile must be attested and Humana authorized.

Usually it is expressed as a percentage of the Medicare fee schedule, which can be at, above or below 100 percent depending on specialty and market. We review the offer before you sign. See payer contracting.
