Where this usually goes wrong
Network need declines
UHC screens requests for network need before credentialing. A request that names the wrong specialty or location can be declined for adequacy in a market that actually needs you.
Optum is a separate world
Optum Behavioral Health has its own portal, application and committee. Behavioral providers who apply to UHC medical are redirected and lose weeks.
Product-line surprises
Approval for commercial products does not always include Medicare Advantage or Medicaid. Practices find out when claims deny.

Questions about UnitedHealthcare
How long does UnitedHealthcare credentialing take?
UHC usually completes credentialing in 60 to 90 days after accepting a request for participation, with contracting adding two to four weeks. Optum behavioral credentialing tends to run 90 to 120 days.
Does UnitedHealthcare use CAQH?
Yes. UHC pulls application data from CAQH ProView, and Optum does as well for most provider types. Your profile must be attested and both plans authorized.
What if UHC declines my request for network need?
You can request reconsideration with supporting information about patient demand or unique services. We prepare that request when it has a realistic chance and tell you when reapplying later is the better option.
How do ABA and behavioral providers enroll with Optum?
