A Maryland medical license is issued by the Maryland Board of Physicians, a mid-volume board serving a large hospital and federal health workforce. Applications are filed through the board's online application system and require at least two years of ACGME or AOA accredited postgraduate training for all applicants, with ECFMG certification for international graduates. The board also requires fingerprint-based state and FBI criminal history records checks through the state's approved vendor, verification of education, training, exams and every prior license, and the board's New Physician Orientation after licensure. Every element is verified at the primary source before the file is considered complete.
On controlled substances, Maryland requires a state CDS registration from the Office of Controlled Substances Administration before the DEA will issue a Maryland registration; CDS applicants must attest to a one-time two-hour controlled substance prescribing CME and enroll in the Maryland PDMP. Renewal is biennial on an alphabetical cycle, with last names A to L renewing by September 30 of even years and M to Z by September 30 of odd years, 50 CME credits per cycle with at least 25 Category 1, a one-time implicit bias course, and a $100 per credit penalty for shortfalls; the first renewal after initial licensure is exempt from CME.
